Comment (by anonymous):

Downloaded the latest (and oldest) madwifi tarball.

 unpacked and typed "make".

 It failed.

I tried doing apt-get install build-essentials and it said there was no
install candidate, but I didn't do apt-get update since I didn't have the
internet connection since I didn't have the working drivers.

I did eventually manage a hard connection, which allowed me to do apt-get
update, at which point build-essential appeared and I was able to compile
and install mad-wifi, and they worked after a reboot. (and after
upgrading the kernel I had to rebuild the modules again and reboot).

So it was my problem, but it was hard to diagnose since everything only
worked with an internet connection, but I couldn't have that until I got
your modules (or some fairly ugly cabling and proxying).
