In the past, there was the "karma isn't changing" bug which was caused by the process crashing - if you joined after a certain arbitrary date, there was some kind of resource leakage that was killing the karma update nightly. There may be something similar happening in the discussion karma counting. An alternative is that you are using a different email address for mailing lists than those declared in your profile?
