Except maybe for the time taken to do backup & restore, re-flashing
the device is both faster and easier than dist-upgrade. The backup &
restore could be improved somewhat, especially in regards to application
installer though. Automatic restoring of packages after reflashing
could be risky though.
How about in the backup storing a list of apps that were installed
from repositories and the repository list, then post flash offer to
reinstall some/all of the apps from the repositories - less likely to
break and less space needed for backup. (I assume there is some way
apps can have their settings stored/restored in the backup by saving
them in a place backedup/restored by the utility).
