No way, that's way to Orwellian, it would give Mageia a really bad
reputation.

A rough count of installs can be done by counting the number of unique IPs
accessing the updates, of course this won't be precise (proxies, etc) but
it should give a rough estimate, there is no need for precise numbers.


I agree, in this case a rough count is good enough.

We all remember the Intel ID system where you could be identified at chip level through the BIOS. Scary business. A distro could have denied you installation just based on your chip ID.
