I think you are mistaken about amarok's backend.  As far as I know,
xine is the least likely to work.  Whether gstreamer or vlc backend is
best seems to depend on your hardware.  On one of my installations
gstreamer works best, on another vlc works best.  It really seems to
be a case of trial and error.
