I had a look at backports but couldn't find anything so I got it from
testing using apt-pinning. I hear what you say about mixing sources which
could break stuff, but everything seems to be ok. And with the imagemagick
from testing the -scene 1 command works.

Don't know if this helps and I can't remember how I did it but I have 
6.2.4 from either http://www.backports.org or from the testing branch. 
It's better to use backports because they are specifically built 
(depending on which repository you choose) for your flavour of Debian.. 
Sorry if backports is a dead end. Testing might break other things if 
you are running Sarge. However, if I got it from there, it didn't for me 
(sorry different computer to what I am writing this on).
