First off your use of -flatten is buggy!

Put image operators AFTER the images...

   /usr/bin/convert $i -flatten -quality 95 ${i/xcf/jpg}

As for XCF.  It it is difficult to say without knowing what you are
trying to flatten.  Remember -flatten adds the background color behind
all the images flattened, unless told otherwise.
