| I found another way to do it, without imagemagick... here it is for
| potentially interested people : mplayer -vo png (produces frames called
| 0...<num>.png)

It is always better to do it in a application that is designed for that
type of job. IM realises this and calls 'degelages' to do things that
it probably should attempt to do itself.
For AVI, I believe IM calls mplayer to handle the image any way, so you
do not lose anything, except gain more control of the inital conversion
step by doing it yourself.
