I finally found out how you make the canvas of a vector graphic
completely transparent when converting it to a raster graphic. The right
command line is
convert -density 309 -channel RGBA logo.eps logo.png
(With logo.eps being a vector EPS.)
It is the "-channel RGBA" that seems to create an alpha channel for the
canvas, setting it to totally transparent.
