For JPEG's you can use 'jhead' to add,modify,extract,delete the thumbnail image from the EXIF profile. http://www.sentex.net/~mwandel/jhead/ For the TIFF and PNGs....I think your going to have to play with the exif bits a little more. You might also want to check out 'exiftool' I think you can write thumbnail images with that to JPEGs and TIFFs. Don't know about PNGs. I just tried with a PNG and it seemed to work.
