Yes they can work before v6.2.8  but ONLY by removing the assignments.
Of course they were developed AFTER that release because assignments
maked it a lot easier to handle things.

That makes the expresions much more complex.

So substitute the 'xx' with the previous assigned expression for xx.

Yes but it is also well out of date!

After this release a lot of things happened including GIF animation
improvements, and as you discovered, -fx distortion image methods.
