It's not quite that simple: setting magit-process-connection-type was indeed a 
viable solution until a few days ago, but since then I have also found that the 
HEAD version of Emacs hangs when magit pipes text to a git process (e.g. upon 
committing, or staging a hunk).

Very curious.
