Only to some extent.  Until further notice, pretty much every distro
does packaging with upstream tarballs, and so does Marmalade.

Well, if left as-is, it's only a matter of time before people start
adding copyright lines again, and "who's maintainer" or "who committed
the most" are inherently transient metrics, so at some point in the
future, the list would need to be revised again, manually, in every
file, no matter what.

By directly crediting only a single entity and consolidating its
constituents into an auto-generated list that covers the entire project,
we can permanently retire the Copyright Cleaner hat and direct our
attention to less mind-numbing ventures.

Regardless of our contributors' feelings on the matter, we'd be doing
what's morally just.  Besides, recognition can be a powerful motivator.
