I can answer my own question. The problem was an old version of Magit lurking 
in my .emacs.d/site-lisp, which had (require 'assoc) in it. For some reason, it 
was being loaded instead of the melpa version. On Emacs 24.4 (require 'assoc) 
stops Magit from loading correctly. Removed it, magit is happy again.
