 I don't think it is customary (i.e. I don't remember having ever seen it),
but it seems like a good idea to me.

 Just one: could we please still have "install_strip" and "install_unstrip"
targets and make install equivalent to the appropriate one depending on the
USE_DEBUG value? Like this it would still be possible to override the
default install type if needed -- although I don't see any reason as to why
this would be needed, it seems wiser to assume that there will be one in
the future.
