I was thinking that modules, libs, headers are either in specific 
directories or have specific names.
Not a very good approach, but install in wxWindows could warn of the 
existence (or delete) old headers etc. and install in m could do the 
same ...

Maybe building an RPM from CVS and use it for installation (even if 
local to home directory for testing) would ensure that each installation 
is 'clean'.
