the whole "expand" thing could be replaced by searching, but this would be
slower. This is why anyone wants to have auto-complete/expand features. But
then it has to do the "right" thing.
I think you are right, if someone says: "but I need to find this seldem
used address, too", then the answer is: "search it!".
IMHO, completion has to solve fast access to everyday addresses.

but then it does the job already? I thought it wouldn't find any substring
(also not at the beginning). Ok, I switched it off, now.

so we could also allow *foo when only looking at beginnings to find
substrings, and wouldn't f*bar be useful, too?
After trying that, I see that all this already works :-)
(apologies, I'm using M for only one month now)
So I switch substring expansion off, and use *foo if I want to find a
substring, very nice.

Also, "useful sometimes" means, it could be replaced by searching in the
address book, if this would become more comfortable, e.g.:

- drag and drop to an edit field
- context menu: "Send Message" (eventually also on double click)
this one is very useful, if you often write messages to different addresses

other:

- drag and drop inside the tree
- place autocollect folder at end of tree
