Well, at one time a bunch of the internals were exposed via Python but
it got deprecated when insufficient developers were available. I think
it is just commented out so there is no reason why it ciuld not be
resurrected by someone with the time / inclination.

Well, there is wxODBC so maybe there is another project you can help
us with. Why not join the developer list and see what you can help with? :-)
