Hi. I'm attempting to break away from Outlook Express, and ideally I'm looking for a standalone mail client that'll work on Windows an Linux. Mahogany would appear to be the ideal solution. I'm trying out the new Mahogany 0.65a, and have a couple of issues, perhaps someone can help. In brief, the issues I have are:

1) Trouble with MBOX files; Mahogany says they're corrupt.
2) Storing the configuration data in a text file under Windows, instead of in the registry.

In detail,

1) I'm trying to import my message database from Outlook Express. I've used the Mozilla mail client to convert to MBOX format, which I figured Mahogany supports out-of-the-box. I've taken a peek at the results and the MBOX files seem ok; it's a simple enought format. However if I try adding the MBOX file as a file folder in Mahogany, when I open the folder it complains the file is corrupt:

16:00:49: Status: Opening mailbox "OEInbox"...
16:00:49: Error: Mail log: C:\MBOX-Import\OEInbox (file C:\MBOX-Import\OEInbox) is not in valid mailbox format
16:00:49: Error: Could not open mailbox 'OEInbox'.

I tried converting the line endings from CRLF (as created by Mozilla) to just LF but it makes no difference.

When I created the folder, I explicitly chose "MBOX (traditional unix)" as the folder file format. However if I look at the folder properties, the folder subtype is set to "MBX Folder (best)", and is greyed out so I can't change it.

The file as created by Mozilla contains lines like this:

From - Mon Jan 1 00:00:00 1965

at the start of each email. This seems OK - I tried replacing the '-' with an email address in case Mahogany required an address there, but the same problem persists. Each time I tried a modification to the mbox file, I removed the folder from the tree first then created it afresh.

Always, after creation, and even before trying to open it for the first time, the properties indicate "MBX Folder (best)" rather than "MBOX (traditional unix)"

Ultimately, I'd like the folders to be in "MBX Folder" format, as presumably this has some kind of indexing to solve the speed problems of MBOX files, but Mozilla won't export to MBX format as used by Mahogany (is this standard format, and if so where can I find the file format spec? Couldn't find it with Google - all I could find were references to the MS Outlook mbx file format, and the Eudora mbx format, neither of which yielded file format specifications).

2) I want to use Mahogany on Linux and Windows, the idea being to put it on a USB memory device.

On Linux, the configuration data is stored in a file, as I understand it, which means it shouldn't be too difficult to carry the configuration data on the device alongside the executable.

owever on Windows, the data is in the Registry. I can save the registry data to a file, but it'd be nice to be able to use the same config file for both platforms, if that's possible.

Is it possible to get Mahogany to store its configuration data in a text file as per the unix version?

Any assistance appreciated, Cheers Kevin F. Quinn
