Looks like that's it.
I played around with the "SSL/TLS usage" setting and found that the POP3
server that does not work with the virus scanner is using TLS, and the
server that does work does not use SSL or TLS.

If I set the properties to "don't use SSL at all" it works.

So I wonder what's better:  using encryption, or using a proxy virus
scanner?  As is expected, it seems you can't have both. :)
