In the 'Folders' pane of the 'Folder'->'Properties...' dialog, there
is an entry named 'Use Trash folder'. If it is *not* checked, you
get the behavior that you describe (messages are not actually
removed from the folder), but they get a 'D' flag in their 'Status'
column.

If this is the case, and you want to really remove those messages from
the folder, you have to use the 'Expunge' command, under the 'Message'
menu. This will remove *all* the messages that are marked deleted in the
current folder. Hitting 'x' will trigger this command.

By the way, shouldn't this command be in the 'Folder' menu, as it
applies to the whole folder?
