 I understand that it would be nice but there is really no way to know when
you're done with it then and allowing editing the message both in internal
and external editor is just a recipe for disaster so I don't want to do
this.

 If your editor is customizable enough to be able to execute a command when
the window is closed, you could write a helper script (e.g. bat file) to
make what you want possible but I don't know textpad enough to help you
with this.
