 You're right that we should have an option (on by default) to use SSL for
POP/IMAP in the global Network options, but we don't have it currently --
the SSL options there are for SMTP/NNTP (not terribly useful) only.

 This has also been answered but I guess it would be nice to have a
separate "port number" control near the "server" field (while also
continuing to allow entering the port after the colon in the main field).
Or at least have some help/tooltip saying this. But I don't have time to
fix this right now, sorry.
