I see. I had been stuck on mvn release:prepare and still am. However now I understand that the right configuration is a hybrid of the wiki below (which I followed first) and Jukka's page (which I followed second). I will have another run at it.
I agree it will be good for me to get it working too in order to vet the process, no problem. At the same time if you are able to just do the release, and I'm still stuck, might as well get 0.2 out rather than block merely on my head-scratching.
