Indeed, as an Indian, living abroad, the Indian nonchalance and apathy (at times, antipathy) to everything Indian has disturbed me. It has been my experience that not only do Indians lack the pride in being Indian, an Indian abroad usually avoids another on the street. Even a mere acknowledgement by nodding, that is afforded to apparent strangers of any other nationlaity, is denied a fellow Indian. This is not surprising, for such a mentality exists even within India, where associating among one's own is considered rude (a case in point would be what was refered to as "CD" in our campus). It is uniquely Indian (perhaps more "North-Indian) to look down upon this very basic of animal instincts: Seeking out one's own. The only exception that I have been fortunate enough of experiencing was in Calgary, Canada, where the Indian community took pride in being Indian, irrespective of our linguistic, religious or provincial barriers. Among the greatest of the offenders along these lines, I am ashamed to say, are the Bengalis. Bengalis take a special pride in their self-effacing modesty.
