Dear friends

can anybody give me some information about the following things:

1. how is it possible to setup a linux network which is like the
WinNT server/clients model, ie server and many clients accessing
the server shares and the users authenticated by the server.=20
  =20
I went through the networking, NIS, NFS, samba howtos and etc..

2. I think, before going to the details its better to start from=20
simple things that are concerned with networking, i having doubts
these things.. i am a bit new to networking.

  =20
3. i'll tell the situation iam facing now.

The os is RedHat 6.2, and pentium machines.
 =20
first. i have 2 machines connected via a hub. i did a custom install
on both the machines, also ( enabled NIS domain), i configured the=20
eth0 and gave static ip address on both machines. I didnt give=20
md5 and shadow passwd option. the eth0 starts ok while booting.=20
   the problem came with ping.

from machine 1 i could ping to machine 2, but pinging from machine 2
to machine 1 was very slow, showed around 85% packet loss. Then i =
checked the cable and interchanged the network card, still it showed
around 85% packet loss from machine 2 to machine 1 (The hub wasnt=20
changed). machine 1 to machine 2 was ok with no packet loss. so i=20
reinstalled machine 2 wihout checking NIS. still the same prob came.=20
  =20
Then i gave the ip addresses and hostname etc.. in /etc/hosts
file on both machines then the ping began to work fine. is it=20
nessary that we should give the information of all hosts to all
   machines.

Can u tell me which files need to be edited to get the ping right
atleast and also these server, host and domain things
Are the /etc/hosts, sysconfig/network the only essential things?
 =20
now i configured NIS ( made machine 1 NIS server, and gave an NIS
domainname ) after that, while running the ypinit -m command,=20
there was an error "cannot create passwd.byname ..shadow not found"
the exact words of the error message is not same but the message
   meant like as stated above.
i didnt select shadow passwd while installing, is it because of=20
   that.

HOW can i install shadow without reinstalling linux. =20
  =20
the nis server started inspite of this. on the client after running
ypbind i gave the "ypcat passwd" command,, it showed error
   "passwd.byname not found.. "
  =20
I left it there and configured NFS and it seemed to work fine, i=20
could access shares on the server from the client machine.
Is this the way to setup a client/server env like in windowsNT?

   All the situation changes now..

Till now there were only 2 machines on the network, with only
linux on it. There is a winowsNT network which is nconnected.
Now i had to make windozNt server access the linux server so i=20
conneced the linux network to the win network. The win server=20
is configured to run on DHCP ( linux is static ip) . pinging from
linux to win sever and vice versa failed.

( the ip of linux starts from 192.0.0.1 and NT server ( dhcp )=20
   starts from 146. ... .. )=20
Is it a problem with ip address.

Now from linuxconf i selected the eth0 interface to dhcp, but didnt=20
remove the static ip addresses. I rebooted the linux server and gave=20
   "ip addr"

it showed a dynamic ip addr starting from 146. . ... ,, pinging
from win server to linux succeded this time, but vice versa failed=20
,, the NFS server didnt work also. i didnt change eth0 of linux=20
   client to dhcp.
       =20
how can i configure dhcp sever, and NIS, NFS, SAMBA in it=20

4. once i configure NIS, NFS, SAMBA etc, can i access postgresSQL
database server from linux server and SQL client frontend from=20
linux client machines ? Or only a TCP/IP connection is necessary
   for it?=20
Can the Postgeres server be on linux and client be on windows?
   How is it done.

5. can linux be installed over a network? eg: machine m1, m2.
m1 is having linux installed and also a cdrom is there.
m2 does not have any os but connected physically to m2.
can linux be installed on m2 from m1? How?

I know that the mail is too long for everybody. the problem is that
i dont've much time left to implement the above situation.
If i had more time I wouldnt 've troubled u with this much questions.
Even if u dont know every thing, please share what u know,=20
that will be really helpfull.
=20

once again, sorry for taking ur precious time
and thank u for reading this atleast.

Knox J=20

I believe finding aswers to this could be a real help to the=20
community.
