Go Xfree86.org. They have details of differences between XFree86 and X.
Also read the local docs installed by Xfree86.

May be, If you are using Deb on a Box with nVidia Chip, and
are using their proprietary modules for getting "best" out of
the card.  AFAIK Deb do ship with nVidia modules.

That's what nVidia has done with the binary only modules.
Now are you going to get satisfied with them? Binary only modules mean
untrusted code right in the kernel. Is this okay with major portion of
the buyers?

Microsoft had to publicly admit that they stole large amounts of
code from FreeBSD Source. But it is not illegal as FreeBSD is
distributed under BSD license. Anybody can download FreeBSD and
change every occurence of "FreeBSD" with "MyOwnOS (TM)" and
sell it without breaking any law.
