ILUGCOCHIN met at 2:00pm at the Internet Club, Broadway. The
meeting was kicked off with a review on all the new features present
in Redhat 8.0. Reviews by many of the users have shown that Redhat has gone
notch up in elegance and in speed. Many of the screen shots show a smart and
functional desktop. This was then continued with a discussion on voice
recognition on Linux, ViaVoice is cuurently being used on Linux for documents
on Linux and Xvoice is integrated with Viavoice to achieve command control on
the desktop. This solution is not free as IBM charges for its product, though
Xvoice is free, therefore the Linux Community is on the way to make a free/open
Source voice recognition solution on Linux and is not at present trying to
augment any of the features present on Xvoice.
This was then followed by a discussion about the configuration of unsupported
display cards on Linux, with a detailed explanation on the values to change in
order to make the configured card work correctly.
We had many new many members attending this meeting, thus again creating more
awareness about Linux with the combined effort of the LUG members, a lot of new
members attended the meeting showing an unprecedented growth in the GNU/Linux
Movement.
This ended the meeting for October.
