Lets consider the server side first. Here there is no such thing as
usability* as those who maintains it are trained professionals
..Availability of trained professionals/Documentaion on the internet
/reliability /manageability /cost-effectiveness all makes linux bettr
choice than Microsoft/Mac/Novell/Commercial Unix like OS /*BSD family

On the Desktop segment ,The concern is usability..Untrained people who
want their work done than tamper the OS belong to this segment and
this is the where you were telling GNU/Linux is not ready yet
But i would say within some months ,Microsoft will release their VISTA
OS which will have more and more features!. which i am sure will make
it difficult for an average end user to (first they have to understand
what those feature is!) use it.(I know some people who still clings to
WIN98 because XP is more harder to use)
>From the other end GNU/Linux distros that concentrates on desktop like
Ubuntu/Linspire/Xandros etc have made it more and more easier to use
Linux .
So now tell me is not Linux ready for the desktop......it only depends
on the way you look at it .and its only a matter of few months
When MS releses VISTA,and The Desktop Linuxes relese their next
release..... there will be a merge from two sides in which the user
will surely have to make a choice of a Desktop with useability as the
main concern.
So according to my theory Linux is already ready /its only a matter of
a couple of months for the driving force (Consumer Market!) to make it
known to the world that Linux is ready for the Desktop

(Now we are telling hydrogen fuel /LPG is not ready for full
deployment in vehicles, but imagine if tomorrow all the petrolium wells
are empty. Then i am sure hydrogen (even nuclear! fuels) are ready for
any conditions within hours! )
