Hello All,

What do you guys think about having a hardware
compatibility list for the commonly available hardware
(atleast the ones that are available here in
India/cochin). Admittedly, its a duplication of effort
but I'm sure it'll save most *nix users the trouble
of googling around for compatibility and trial 'n'
error. Most importantly, there's help available
locally if need be. In other words, if someone has
success in getting a particular harware to work with
any flavour of *nix, it'll be a good idea to have a
central repository for the larger benefit of the *nix
community.
For the benifit of novice users, a database of dmesg
wouldnt be of much help as not many would be able to
identify a device say a cam by the name/mfg. of the
chipset. I suggest a database in the lines of

Device Type (webcam, AGP, RAID card etc..)
Distro - Vanilla or custom complied (specs if yes
including patches, gcc version, compile options etc)
Binary driver avaiable (if yes list the site)
Date tested on
Tested by (Contact name, email id etc)
Driver/modules
user end application to use the device
limitations compared to windows platform and known
issues
tweaks if any
Any other remarks

Obviously, we need to host it somewhere. What do you
guys think?

Cheers!
Santhosh Joseph
