Warm Greetings To The FOSS Community, The Meeting for the month of July (27/07/2008) was conducted successfully. This time also we had a great turnout, with lot of people braving the climate to attend the meeting. The were "32" people from far off places who attended the meeting,
Some brief snapshots from the meeting. Date: 27-07-2008 Time: 2pm - 5.30pm Venue: Internet Club, IInd <javascript:;> Floor, AMI Trust Building, Broadway Enclave, Broadway, Ernakulam Attendance : 32 The meeting started a bit late waiting for people to arrive. There was the customary introduction, after which the moderator talked about Free Software ,the GNU Movement, Open Source Software and Licenses. There was a discussion on the aspects of the Open Source Software. There was also a small introduction to the Affero GPL and LGPL. The concept of Zero Knowledge was also discussed. GnewSense <javascript:;> GNU/Linux Installation The discussion moved onto the agenda for the day, with the speaker giving an introduction to the Gnewsense distribution and how it was different from Ubuntu. The Installation session started by explaining the prerequisites. The speaker talked about some important things that need to be taken care before installation (eg : like checking the media etc ..). Since GNU/Linux distributions provide very easy Installation programs especially with a live cd, the explanations were satisfactory. And also considering the fact that there were only 5 people who hadnt installed GNU/Linux before. There were questions ranging from how a live cd works to hibernation requirements. Partitioning was one area were there were questions from many of the attendees. The Installation was wound up by 4pm. After the discussions the audience moved on to have tea and snacks. In fact the break was one point the meeting became alive. After tea the audience moved on to attend the technical presentation of the day. Basics of Content Management Systems by Kurian A brief introduction on the concept of the Content Management System was given in the beginning followed by a small overview on how WWW works and also how a CMS behaves on the internet was also discussed. The audience provided several inputs and the discussion was build on top of those ideas. Then session moved on to the Installation of Mambo. The following relevant sections were presented: - Instructions on installing the main components - Apache, PHP and MySQL <javascript:;> were provided. - Configuring Apache, creating and granting permissions for MySQL <javascript:;> user for Mambo etc .. - Mambo was installed using web interface and the site was hosted locally. - A small content was created then and was posted and published in the site. - Types of users in Mambo, their roles, importance of Sections, Categories and Menus were discussed . Audience were mainly focused on the versatile scope of a CMS. Finally the links for documentation and the forum that is maintained by the Mambo Foundation were shared. The App of the Month (Nautilus) by Sreenadh was cancelled in order to wind up the meeting earlier. It was basically to avoid inconvenience to the attendees because of the serious security situation in the city. Finally it was time for winding up for the day, and everyone assembled for the concluding session. Few Firefox Stickers given by Mr Mathew Chacko and some low quality tiny GNU Stickers were distributed, the audience were asked to put their feedback into the ML. The meeting wound up at 5.30pm with the recitation of the national anthem.
