Hello All
I am very happy to inform you all that ILUG is putting up a Stall at the
Information Security Awareness program exhibition on Saturday.
Date : Saturday 09/08/2008.
Time : From 10 am to 8pm
Organizers : Kochi City Police

Asian school of cyber laws

Summary of the program:
The usage of internet has exponentially increased in the past few years.
With the recent proliferation of technology in terrorist and other
malicious activities, the importance of information and computer security
is becoming more evident. Also, large number of children has started to
regularly use the Internet at home, at school, in libraries, and
community centers making information security a matter of great concern.
Adults and kids have been victimized by malicious hackers / cyber
criminals - stealing their passwords, and sensitive data, exposing to
online sexual abuse, and stealing bank account details to name a few.
Living in a cyber world, and also Kochi being the IT Capital of Kerala, we
are not very far from these cyber crimes. Foreseeing the rapid growth in
cyber crimes, Kochi City Police opened its Cyber Investigation cell on Mar
2008.
The Kochi City Police (www.kochicitypolice.org) in association with Asian
School of Cyber Laws (www.asianlaws.org) is promoting the International
Information Security Day (www.informationsecurityday.com) by conducting
an Information Security Awareness program starting from 07 Aug 2008 to 21
Aug 2008. The aim of this initiative is to inject and generate security
awareness among all strata in the community. A variety of programs and
events are organized for various sectors, including, but not limited to
Schools and colleges, Commercial establishments, online malls, Banks,
Financial Institutions, IT industry, Share Trading industry, etc.

The organizers of the program had personally contacted me 2days back and
offered us a stall free of cost.
(Because of which it is feasible.) The reason behind this was their
interest to promote Free Software as a
secure platform and their honest desire for the participation from the
community.
Since 3 days is a very small time, we really do not have much time for
planning and the sort.
What I think has to be done is :
- Provide awareness about Free Software ( through posters and personal
interactions )
- Why Free Software has the capability to be Secure.
- How security can be implemented at home, office, schools and internet
cafes.
- Put up a few PCs <javascript:;> and Laptops running various Internet,
Office and Graphical Applications.
- Demonstration of an LTSP Thin Client setup.
- Screening of the Open Movie ( if we can get a projector )
- Distributing GNU/Linux and Free Media and Docs.
I really do not know how much justice we can do to the event, but there
is no wasting
time for talking about that and think about executing it.
We have been able to form a small team for saturday about 5-9 people who
can be at the stall,
in order to handle the crowd which i guess would be the highest on saturday.
We have also been able to get hold of a few Desktops and Laptops from JJ
and others.
Since people all already working at tight schedules in their office,
completing all
the tasks before saturday is quite a big challenge. Hence I request
everyone to contribute
your time for these tasks. We also need a contributions in other ways as
well :
- A3 and A4 Posters for the stall (About Free Software, Security)
- Chairs and Tables
- Transportation facility
- Projector and Screen
So you are all personally invited for the event on Saturday which starts
at 10 am. Please join the team in
making it a grand success.
You can contact me at this email id or call me at 9995717112
You can also call Sreenadh at 9747173432
Thank You
Regards
