Has anyone in India actually gone ahead and got the refund from Microsoft ?

I purchased an HP Pavilion dv3000 recently and when I checked the EULA
agreement after I made the payment and broke the sealed package
containing the Laptop, there was no option to say 'no, I do not
agree', it ONLY HAD the 'I agree' option.

Needless to say that I don't have Microsoft Windows Vista Premium any
longer on my machine. I have Ubuntu Hardy Heron and Debian GNU/Linux.

The criterion when selecting a laptop should be the user's convenience
and his intended usage.

Decide on your needs and your budget and then purchase 'the most
powerful' hardware configuration available in the market at that point
of time at that price. Check up on the Hardware compatibility list and
go in the most FOSS friendly hardware that meets your needs/budget.

For example my laptop has a nVidia Corporation GeForce 8400M GS whose
drivers are proprietary. I prefer not to use the 3D options of my
machine as I do not want to encumber myself with Non-Free Software.
There is also another practical reason not to use the Nvdia drivers as
most Nvdia drivers for GNU/Linux are known to have rootkits that have
not been fixed for ages.

IMHO judging the hardware by looking at the Operating System software
installed on it is not the right way to go about it.

Factors like battery backup time, the ergonomics of the machine, the
screen and resolution size, reliable and global after sales support
etc are also major factors one needs to look into before deciding on
any Laptop model apart from the Operating System installed on it.
