Hello All,

I believe its the Free Software community that needs to be involved.

We need free software groups in colleges and schools that can
think independently, there should not be any restriction of an
organization or a group.

Freedom should exist, not just for name sake..

Thank You

as far as i know there are active chapters of csi in trivandrum and kochi.
regarding student chapters some of the office bearers of these chapters will be able to provide details. we can also encourage them to form chapters.

the issues regarding students is

how many are genuinely interested in doing projects? may be 25% in a class.

knowledge of students in programming will be limited when they are in college only after they get out will they understand better ( this is the case with all courses) by the time the project time is over.

the top priority of students is to score well in their exam. ( cut off to get into a company)

in any case if they get into a company the company trains them.

Every large scale change starts with awareness.

                I agree

Students should be aware of their freedom to
                    choose their own topics.

It is not only about topics, freedom in a broader
sense is being lost in academics on the whole,
Of course, there needs to be a starting point which is
                this.

If this issue gets noticed by the academic
community, we can push for a circular from the
university. For that to happen, this needs to be
                    discussed throughout the community.

What I feel can be done
                - Create a pool of project ideas ( there are a lot of
                Free Software Projects on the
Internet at different stages of development, we need
to create a sort of legend for
                students ,
                - Create a page on the Internet that will serve as a
                reference to teachers,
so that they are convinced of the scope of the project
and how it can do good
to the student, college and most important the
                "Community".
                - Once projects are completed they are uploaded to the
                website and also
are presented and spoken of at events and Community
                group meetings
(like ILUG Cochin), and the project will develop wings.
                - This will serve as an example and lesson for the
                other students as well
and then we have a whole lot of useful software
                created by the students
                for the community.

                - The Web page also needs information from the normal
                users and business
people, so that they can put in their requirements
                into the page so that
it becomes " a self sustaining community".

                - Finally let us begin upon, and reiterate on what is
                the aim of an
academic project in our society and again " the free
                software community".
Many times students do not know what path they need to
                take to create
                something useful for the society.

We need to draft an open letter to all educational
                institutions
which states what an academic projects means to the
                society and how
important is the freedom for students to pursue their
                own interests and how
they can guide them to the right path.

There are lot of teachers and academicians in the
                Mailing List. I believe
we can get lot of information from them. :)

                Thank You
