No. These are called social networking sites. They themselves are not a
threat to your privacy. Read their "Privacy Policy" and "terms and
Conditions" to know how safe your data is.

Posting your personal  info is completely up to you. If you don't want to
post, then dont. They wont force you. I use orkut. It gives me enough
control on who can view what. And I could get in touch with many of my old
friends through orkut. I havent used facebook. But I heard that its a very
good one. But ofcourse, your privacy/security is completly in your hands.

Yeah that is true. If you dont know what you are clicking / typing in
address bar, you can be a victim of Social
