To the best of my knowledge, caca library uses 'aalib'. It is programmed to 
display images and video frames using ascii characters. '-vo aa' is black and 
white, and '-vo caca' is colour ascii chars, I guess.

To see 'real' movie in console, try enabling FrameBuffer. Then you can use the 
SDL lib or even fbdev to view movies or pics. I forgot, but there's some python 
command line utility to view images in console
