about this issue with vendors selling windows based systems
i agree with you, most non technical persons would rather have a system they
have no idea how it works as long as it does
i have tried to convince my own parents to change but the moment something is
not working, its always linux's fault

for a start, why dont you publish a list of hardware components which are
supported out of the box itself
like make a specification for desktop systems
(for eg: using AMD proc, AMD mobo 780GX etc etc, which use so and so
northbridge which is fully supported etc)
the idea is to introduce systems that work out of the box for most non
technical people so that they atleast start using it
once they get the hang of it, they will realise the full potential of it...
wat i'm saying is that in order to get an intro into the scene
we might have to do somethings like the above.

i guess we can do a lot for most people if we can publish a list of components
which are supported by different OS
the usual components are:
gfx - nvidia chipset/radeon or intel etc...
sound - realtek/creative etc
lan - realtek/broadcomm etc
southbridge - VIA chipset etc etc

the breakup of this itself gives an idea on what all components by which all
companies are supported by that distro
so he only gets those things which will work
and if he has any issues on integration, thats what this forum is for rite...

this is my idea, not sure on how practical this is... any suggestions???
