Wow! That was really not what I expected to happen. Anyway, you should still be able to login through rescue mode. Also try all the kernels listed in the boot menu. But unfortunately I don't have much knowledge with the new Unity desktop.
However, you should try logging in through rescue mode. Then running the command "init 2" which may hopefully support graphics interface. Try running "gdm" from there. Also, try to make sure all your updates were properly installed. By running "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" once more.
