If you reject the mail during the SMTP phase, and it came from a legitimate sender, their mail server will return the DSN back to the sender. If it was spam, the spambot will go somewhere else. This is why you reject during SMTP session. Because if you don't, the spambot comes back to your supposed legal recipient and sends a bunch more forged mail. And each of those messages you bounce back to the innocent victim of forgery.
