The sending of password reminders depends on three things. 1) password reminders are sent by Mailman's cron/mailpasswds job. If this is not run preiodically by cron in the installation, password reminders will not be sent for any list. 2) The list setting on General options controls the sending of reminders for that list. If it is No, no reminders will be sent for that list. 3) If the installation and list send reminders, an individual list member can opt out on their user options page by setting the option to No, but if either the installation or list are not sending reminders, they cannot opt in. > Similarly, on the "Digest Options" page there is the setting > "When receiving digests, which format is default?" > > And regardless of whether this is set to "Plain" or "Mime", subscribers > logging in to their respective subscription pages will see there the same > parameter invariably set to "Mime". The user's option for MIME or plain digests should be set according to the lists Digest options -> mime_is_default_digest setting when the user first subscribes. Subsequent changes to mime_is_default_digest will not affect existing users. Also, this setting for a user is only meaningful if the user is receiving digests. If you are saying that a newly subscribed user gets set to MIME digests regardless of the setting for mime_is_default_digest at the time of subscription, perhaps this is some local modification of your particular hosted Mailman. It is not the way standard GNU Mailman works. > In terms of logic, this is an unsatisfactory situation: > > either, if the general settings overrule individual setting, then subscribers > are being misled, because they think they have choices when they actually > don't, I agree in the case of password reminders, but it's been that way for many years and I have seen few if any reports of confusion. Most subscribers who want to control this, want to turn reminders off, not on. -- Mark Sapiro <m...@msapiro.net> The highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, California better use your sense - B.
