I had a similar (not exact issue), and it turned out to be a couple things:

1 - the domain of the list was setup incorrectly (my lists are lists.domain.com 
and my domain is simple domain.com)
2 - the mail server that mailman was using was not finding proper DNS lookups when 
talking to the DBS server
