I have one more idea. When you upgraded, is it possible the older instance is still at least partially there in a different path. I.e., you actually have the list in two instances and mass subscribe adds it to the one you aren't otherwise looking at? What happens if you go to the web admin UI, mass subscribe the user and then go to the Membership List? is the user there?
