Played around some more, and figured out the "real" problem: It works
when Safari is set to be the system's default browser, but not Chrome
(which is what I recently switched [back] to for my default browser).
If it's ok to use Safari for MailMate (but only MailMate) then there is
a hidden preference you can use:
defaults write com.freron.MailMate OakBrowserAppBundleIdentifier
-string "com.apple.Safari"
