Edward,
Now I understand. You started in Contacts and then used it in MailMate
by typing the group name as you described. The key then is they’re two
difference apps, one is Contacts, that MailMate takes advantage of by
linking. Yes, it’s what I read in the Help Menu there in MailMate.
Nice feature, but it relies, unfortunately, on a pretty weird app,
Contacts, which does many things badly.
To be honest, I just tried it and it seems to work for 33 Members of my
group the way you said, at least at the outset. BTW, also had MAJOR
problems naming the groups, since there were similar names. But I did it
finally for two alphabetic groups. My advice on that score is keep the
group name SHORT and without special characters. Maybe this is a problem
for you as well?
I notice three things overall in my use of Contacts with MailMate:
1. In Contacts, the group name is very difficult to add or rename -
seems an app issue and not the only one in Contacts, which is why I
don’t use it. Unfortunately my preferred app, Busy Contacts doesn’t
have the same feature, it has others.
2. Expansion of the group to show emails in MailMate. In an existing
email (like this one), the group name just sits there. It isn’t
expandable to a list of names for me, while in a new (empty) email it
is. MailMate issue?
3. The dropdown in MailMate does appear for each person in the expanded
Mail list, once expanded view is showing, however alternate emails in
each contact’s info are not visible or selectable.
My current workaround for this seems about as easy and works reliably
using Busy Contacts. I just go to my contact manager, select the names
by Tag without selecting anything else. and then use the feature to open
a new email with the selected names in either the To, or BCC fields.
It’s very reliable and uses the first instance of email only. So the
features works in MailMate and Busy Contacts probably more reliably than
otherwise.
Respectfully,
Henry Seiden

Hi Edward,
So I take it from your note that you make a group mail from Contacts
and save it in MailMate (r5907). How is this done. The help menu
speaks to using Contacts or other app to select the group, then send
selected contacts to MailMate. Is this (or any alternate selections)
then saved as your group?
A few days ago I first discovered that within Contacts, one could
select the group, control click on the group name, and select “Send
email to GroupName” and then a composer window opens in MailMate
with the group in the Recipient line. However, I only get 5 names of
29 group members when I do that with r5907.
However, I have always sent group emails from within MailMate. To send
a group email to “Department” containing all 29 members of the
department, [I actually put my address in the ‘to’ field and then]
I start typing “Department” in the Cc: field and and it completes
to say ‘Department’. I then hit the Return key, and all 29
contacts show up…well they used to. Now I only get 5. In r5898,
typing dept would cause ‘Department’ to complete and after hitting
Return, all 29 showed up. In r5899, typing dept results in it
completing as: ‘Department (29 contacts)’ and hitting Return shows
me just 5 of the 29 email addresses.
It will probably get sorted out for r5909 or something.

PS: If I put the group in BCC, which might otherwise be better
etiquette for 29 people, I find that one of the 29 wonders if he was
the only one to get the email, or wonders who was left out, or…
