Hi Verdon, You shouldn’t feel completely ‘locked in’. It’s true that Contacts is tightly woven into many corresponding apps in Apple’s universe (from Word processing, spreadsheets, through email and messaging apps all the way to commonality between different types of products and services, like Mac<>iPhone<>iPad). That mostly their database format, though.
However, the actual question you posed about alternatives to Contacts app, in and of itself, is not quite so bleak. Similarly to why MM is so good and an arguably better replacement for Mail, there is an app that uses the same database as Contacts but fixes it up in SIGNIFICANT ways, so it works better and has more versality, even with MM. They also have a Calendar program for MacOS and iOS, BusyCal <https://www.busymac.com/> . Each app can stand alone. I use Busy Contacts <https://www.busymac.com/> on the the Mac side because of that flexibility, it maintains compatibility with Contacts on iPad and iPhone, which I like. It also maintains the usefulness in MM since the feature have been kindly adapted by Bennie so groups are supported in MM in his current Test Build. BTW, the current Test Build in MM is r5911. So I’d recommend it to you to try. I’ve got no connection with the product, just a simple user like you. But one who appreciates it. So if you have questions further, please chat with me off-list. Honestly, the Contacts app is NASTY but it integrates with everything > Apple, and I have so many Apple devices, I feel pretty locked into it.
