IMAP servers are often buggy or have non-standard behavior which will trigger issues in MailMate, but there are definitely also issues in MailMate itself. It's far from perfect and it's fine to doubt its behavior. For example, recent releases definitely have an issue with synching new messages without long delays after sleep mode.
