I've started seeing this in my sendmail logs in the past 24-36 hours:
May 23 15:26:14
to=<[email protected]>,<[email protected]>,<[email protected]>, mailer=esmtp,
relay=mx1.hotmail.com., dsn=5.1.2, stat=Host unknown (Unknown error: 275)
I would expect to see something like this:
May 23 15:26:14
to=<[email protected]>,<[email protected]>,<[email protected]>, mailer=esmtp,
relay=mx1.hotmail.com., [65.54.188.110], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Message accepted for delivery)
That is, the IP address should appear in square brackets after the hostname,
indicating successful resolution of the hostname "mx1.hotmail.com" to an
IP address and subsequent delivery to that address.
This behavior is constant across all recipients at msn.com, live.com and
hotmail.com -- probably because the MX records for all of those are
consistent:
% host -t mx hotmail.com
hotmail.com mail is handled by 5 mx1.hotmail.com.
hotmail.com mail is handled by 5 mx2.hotmail.com.
hotmail.com mail is handled by 5 mx3.hotmail.com.
hotmail.com mail is handled by 5 mx4.hotmail.com.
I'm seeing this on multiple hosts with multiple versions of sendmail
(including the latest) so if it's a sendmail bug, it's a recent one.
I've verified that all hosts have proper name resolution and that
it's working. It is. I'm *only* seeing this problem with delivery
to the MX's above. (I flushed the DNS caches -- no effect.)
I noticed two things while investigating this. First, each one of
those 4 MX's has 17 A records, and they're the same 17 A records
across all 4 MX's. (I'm not sure what purpose this servers, but
at least it's consistent.) Second, the timestamp on the zones
is 2015052101, which is about 36 hours ago and indicates that a
new zone was published roughly around the time I started seeing issues.
So. Is anybody else seeing this? If so, did it start around the
same time? And does anyone happen to have a copy of the previous
zone? -- I'm guessing that a diff will reveal the chance that triggered
this behavior and might lead toward a solution.
