They've being going for at least 10 years, if not a lot longer.

From what I recall, you sign up to them - they don't go looking for mailing
lists. Plus, they don't confirm their address so the list admin or a mod
has to manually approve the subscription (assuming confirmed opt-in). 

I've always assumed good faith with them but I could be wrong.
