Yes. It is how they've run non-free access for well over a decade. A solved problem with broad deployment.
How they handle the backend is unclear. Their scale -- thousands of unique users each querying a collection of large zones that are each replicated for each user -- presents a special challenge that would be daunting to meet with common DNS server software. Whatever they've set up seems to work well.
