Header rewriting is awful if you’re using search to try and find that message someone sent and you want to respond to or refer to. Header rewriting is awful when you’re on multiple lists with many of the same participants and you know X wrote something on one of them but you can’t remember which list and you’re trying to search for it, but can’t find it. Or when there’s an invite for an event from someone that went to a list and, again, you don’t remember which list and can’t find it. There are also lists which, for reasons, don’t set the original author in the reply-to, they keep the list as the reply-to. Sometimes folks contribute to the list, but don’t sign their messages or have anything resembling a .sig file. If you’re on a list like this with two of those people you don’t always know who you’re talking to. Header rewriting is a bad hack, but it happened faster than the IETF process so we’re basically stuck with it.
